VGCA Pool will be used by CGBD for lap swim/practice Mon-Sat 5:30am-10am

With COVID-19 restrictions, many indoor pools remain closed which has left the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins (CGBD) with few pools to practice and perform lap swim in. The VGCA Board was contacted by the CGBD and has agreed to rent pool time to the them. They will be using our pool starting on June 15 between 5:30am and 10am Monday thru Saturday. This is not during our normal operating hours and Coach Amy has agreed to move the Village Green Swim Team Boot Camp to later in the morning (10am-1230pm). This will help offset some of the costs for chemicals this pool season. Traffic and noise will be kept to a minimum as they are well aware this is a residential area. We anticipate this agreement to last through the summer.

VGCA memberships can be paid online

To help with social distancing and to be more convenient for you and our volunteers, we highly recommend filling out the online form and paying via credit card online.

In-person membership drive on Tues, June 16 @ 5-630pm

Our VGCA and VGCA Rec membership numbers are down considerably this year. To help increase that, we will be holding a membership drive in front of the VGCA Park on Tuesday, June 16 @ 5-630pm.

To help with social distancing, we highly recommend filling out the form and paying online. If you would rather not be charged the PayPal fees, then please have your form pre-filled and provide your check/cash to us at the table.

Please ensure 6ft of social distancing if there is a line.

If you plan on using the pool next week, please send your membership info in as soon as possible as we anticipate opening Wednesday, June 17 (more coming on that this evening).

Sweet Frog and a movie in the park

Here is the plan for the plan Sweet Frog and a movie in the park on Friday, June 12th:

  • 7pm — Sweet Frog begins selling frozen yogurt
  • 8pm — Trolls 2 World Tour movie begins

If it rains, we will attempt to have the movie on June 19th.

Kona Ice Yorktown and Chicken Stop confirmed for June 19

Thanks to Jenn Greene, we have confirmed Kona Ice Yorktown and Chicken Stop for Friday, June 19th.

  • Kona Ice — 5:30-7pm
  • Chicken Stop — TBD but probably 4-7pm

Bring a chair, social distance as needed, and enjoy the company of your family, friends, and neighbors.

VGCA membership drive continues

Did you enjoy the food trucks in the park? How about the DJ? Those things are possible due to VGCA. Consider supporting the association for as little as $75 for a year. Also consider supporting our greatest asset and become a pool member.

The common areas under the power lines, the park, the playground, the pool, and the clubhouse all belong to the VGCA.  These assets help increase property value but more importantly help make Village Green a wonderful neighborhood to live in.

We have an online payment solution again this year and will accept cash/check too.

Please go to https://vgnn.org/join for additional info and/or to pay online.

5 free pool passes has been extended

In anticipation of opening June 19 (based on State guidelines/restrictions), we are extending our offer for 5 free pool passes to anyone that purchases their pool passes by June 15 this year. Additional information can be found at vgnn.org/join

We will follow the State guidelines for opening and have been working closely with our pool inspector from the Peninsula Health Department.

We are planning to have a VG Swim Team Boot Camp this year instead of having a VG Swim Team due to restrictions. More information about this will be coming out soon.

Please note that if we open on June 19th we have only lost 14% of the operating time for the pool this season. At this time, we do not plan to offer discounted rates. We hope you plan to support our neighborhood pool and the volunteers who have been getting it ready and will be managing it this year.

Volunteers needed for VGCA pool prep on Sun, May 31st

On Sunday, May 31st we will begin the process of preparing our pool in order to be inspected and possibly opened this season. If we can’t get the volunteers we need, then the VGCA will re-evaluate the need/desire to open the pool for the season. Please come out and help us get the pool ready.

The first shift will start around 9:30am, as I have had some interest from two families to start early and we can always use more volunteers. I will provide updates via Facebook around noon so others know where we stand.

What’s not done by the morning volunteers will need to be done in the afternoon beginning around 2pm. We will need the deck cleared so we can remove the covers at 4pm.

For removing the pool covers at 4pm, I will need 7-10 people to assist. If you have experience removing the covers from years ago, I could use some advice/guidance.

We need volunteers to help with these tasks:

  • Use weed-eaters around the outside and inside of the pool fence.
  • Trim bushes and small trees around pool area.
  • Blow, rake, and bag leaves from outside and inside the pool deck.
  • Set up the lifeguard stands.
  • Remove all furniture from the lifeguard shack and stack out of the way.
  • Remove baby pool cover.
  • Remove main pool cover.
  • Use pool leaf skimmer to remove debris from the water.

Remember to practice social distancing and consider wearing a mask.

THANK YOU!

Update on VGCA pool season

The VGCA Board worked hard during the past 4 weeks trying to come to an agreement on how to best open the pool and provide a safe and enjoyable pool season for Village Green. We have determined that our best option for opening this season was for the VGCA to self manage the pool.

What does this mean? It means we will need to find certified lifeguards and handle the chemicals and maintenance of the pool and pool pump room on our own. Currently, there is a shortage of certified lifeguards in the Hampton Roads area due to COVID-19 and Emergency Orders 53 and 61. We are doing our best trying to identify and interview available certified lifeguards. Without enough lifeguards or volunteers, we CANNOT open the pool.

What is needed to open?

  • certified lifeguards.
  • pass pool inspection performed by the Health Dept.
  • abide by Governor’s Emergency Orders.
  • volunteers to help with pool preparation (cleaning the deck, remove the cover, filling the pool, and getting the pumps running).
  • volunteers to help with lifeguard interviewing, hiring, and management throughout the season.
  • volunteers to assist with pool maintenance throughout the season.
  • volunteers to help close and cover the pool in the September.

When will the pool open? Assuming we enter into Phase 2 or some modified version of Phase 1 which enables recreational pool usage, we hope to open by June 19th (possibly sooner).

What will be the pool hours? We will try to provide the same operating hours as we have in prior seasons (closed Mon, opened Tues thru Sun 1-8pm). This is all dependent upon our ability to hire enough certified lifeguards. No HRA on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year.

How will social distancing and safety be accomplished? We will follow all local and State orders with regards to operating our pool and will consider all recommendations on pool operations provided by the CDC. Initially and based on CDC guidelines and what might be Virginia Phase 2 guidelines, we intend to:

  • remove all furniture and allow patrons bring their own.
  • remove the diving board.
  • prohibit the use of pool toys, balls and devices that are shared.
  • allow floats for single use only.
  • open the baby pool and allow one family or “pod” at a time.
  • have a maximum of 27 swimmers in the pool at one time.
  • have a maximum of 48 patrons (and 2 lifeguards) in the pool area.
  • allow only one person in a bathroom at at time.
  • provide hand sanitizer stations.
  • require showers before entering the pool.
  • post CDC designed signage with regards to COVID-19.

As things change in Virginia, the VGCA Board will review and make the appropriate decisions on restrictions/practices we have in place.

How can you help us with the pool?

  • Volunteer.
  • Find us certified lifeguards and pass their info onto the VGCA board.
  • Become a VGCA pool member.
  • Be supportive to VGCA and our volunteers.
  • Continue to practice social distancing while at the pool or in the park.
  • Volunteer more.
  • Be flexible with us and understand we are all trying to adapt to the “new normal” and self manage the pool for the first time in many years.

Will there be a swim team this year? No, BUT we intend to have a VG Swim Team Boot Camp with Coach Amy. Tentatively, set for June 29 through July 24 Mon-Fri in the morning like swim team practice.
