2026 Labor Day Closures and Schedule Changes
Newport News residents should be aware of the following schedule changes and closures for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7.
- City Offices: Closed
- Newport News Public Libraries: Closed
- Community Centers: Closed, including
- Brittingham-Midtown Community Center
- Courthouse Way Community Center
- Denbigh Community Center
- Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center: Closed Monday, Sept. 7.
- Historic Endview: Closed
- Lee Hall Mansion: Closed
- Lee Hall Depot: Closed
- The Newsome House: Closed
- The Virginia War Museum: Closed
- Main Administrative Office: Closed for Labor Day.
- Trash and Bulk Collection: Delayed one day throughout the week. Monday collections will take place Tuesday, Tuesday collections on Wednesday, Wednesday collections on Thursday, and Thursday collections on Friday.
- Curbside Recycling: Delayed one day throughout the week. The 18-gallon black-bin recycling schedule will not be affected by the holiday delay.
- Recovery Operations Center: Closed Saturday, Sept. 5. The facility will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 8 a.m.
- Newport News Animal Services: The Adoption Center will be open from noon to 5 p.m. The Reunite Lobby will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will also operate on a modified schedule. Bus, light rail, Naval Station Norfolk Base Express, OnDemand ridesharing and paratransit services will operate on a Saturday schedule. Transit center customer service booths and administrative facilities will be closed, but the HRT Customer Service Call Center will remain available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and check their schedules before the holiday.
