  • Saturday, March 15

What:

  • Put pool cover back on the pool (need about 10-15 able-bodied people).
  • Clean up the pool deck rake and bag leaves.
  • Blow leaves away from pool fence.
  • Tarp leaves that are piled up on pickleball court and move them out to the common area and spread.
  • Spread mulch in front flower beds.

Items needed:

  • Rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows for moving/spreading mulch.
  • Gloves and long pants due to tall brush.

This is a great opportunity for the high school students to get service hours.

VGCA Egg hunt and donations

Please join us as we start off membership season with our annual Easter Egg Hunt! We will be taking candy donations for all our kiddos to have some fun. Any candy can be dropped off to the porch of 657 Village Green PKWY. We will be taking donations ASAP as we will have to stuff all the eggs ahead of time!
Bring your family to see the Easter Bunny and grab some eggs on April 5th at 11am. Please meet up at the park and have the kids wait in the sidewalk as a start line! We will have age groups, so the little kids do not get stepped on.

James River Bridge Closure 7-10 Mar

The James River Bridge (JRB) will close to northbound traffic from Isle of Wight County to Newport News on Friday, March 7 at 9 p.m. to Monday, March 10 at 5 a.m. The closure is necessary for contractor crews to make repairs to the bridge’s grid deck.

Backup inclement weather dates: This work is weather-dependent. If unable to implement the closures during the scheduled dates above, VDOT will provide advance notice to the public should the contractor need to utilize the following approved backup dates instead: March 14-17, with March 21-24 as a secondary backup if weather impacts continue.

Motorist and Maritime traffic impacts:

Vehicular Traffic: The northbound lanes on the JRB from Isle of Wight to Newport News will be closed. The JRB will remain open to southbound traffic traveling from Newport News to Isle of Wight County.

Maritime Traffic: Maritime traffic will not be affected by the closure.

Primary detour: Traffic on Route 17 from Isle of Wight County headed toward Newport News will be detoured through Suffolk across the Godwin Bridge to the I-664 interchange and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT). Alternate routes include Route 460 and the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.

Newport News Resumes Automated Trash Cart and Recycling Cart Collection

Automated Trash (green) cart: Tuesday and Wednesday collection routes, unfinished due to this week’s winter weather, will resume on Saturday, Feb.22. Please set your cart out for collection on Saturday morning by 7 a.m. Any Wednesday routes not completed on Saturday will carry over to the next business day, on Monday, Feb. 24. Wednesday and Thursday routes will be collected on Monday, Feb. 24. Any unfinished route will continue to carry over to the next day until returning to your normal day of collection.

Recycling (blue) cart: Red Wednesday and Red Thursday recycling collection routes will resume on Saturday, Feb 22. Please set your cart out for collection on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. Any routes not completed on Saturday will carry over to Monday, Feb. 24.

Bulk: Yellow Week bulk collection will begin, as scheduled, on Monday, Feb. 24.

Recovery Operations Center (ROC):

Saturday, Feb. 22 – Normal hours of operation: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Winter Storm Update

Newport News city offices will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Additional closing and shelter info is as follows:

  • The Four Oaks Day Service Center (7401 Warwick Blvd.) will remain open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide a warming shelter and support services for individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • The current PORT site is Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church (1024 Harpersville Rd). The PORT location will resume normal hours and move to Denbigh United Presbyterian Church (302 Denbigh Blvd.) on Saturday, Feb. 22. PORT sites operate from 5:30 p.m.-5 a.m.
  • In the event of a widespread power outage, a shelter will be provided for residents in need.
  • All city offices, libraries, courts and Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20. Essential city employees and employees deemed mission critical for this event are to report as scheduled.
  • Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20.
  • Recovery Operations Center (ROC) will also be closed on Thursday, Feb. 20. Collections will resume when operations can be performed safely in residential neighborhoods, as the safety of residents and employees is a major concern. Assessment of residential streets for the safe operation of collection vehicles will be ongoing. Once it has been determined the city can safely operate heavy automated cart collection vehicles within neighborhoods, collections will resume. Residents can leave bins out without being penalized.

The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) is calling on local residents to complete an important survey that will help shape the future of fire and emergency services in the community. As part of a strategic planning process, the department seeks input from residents to ensure it continues to meet the needs of those it serves. Community feedback is vital in helping to prioritize the services that are most important to the public.

The survey is quick and easy to complete, and it will remain open until March 31. This is a great opportunity for residents to make their voices heard and help the department better serve everyone in the community.

The city will observe President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 17. Here’s a look at how city offices, facilities, and services will be impacted.

City Offices and libraries  — Closed Monday, Feb. 17.

Recreation Centers — Operating on normal schedule.

Garbage, Recycling & Bulk Waste Collections — No collections on Monday, Feb. 17. All collections for Village Green will be Tuesday, Feb. 18.

There will be no holiday collection delay for 18-gallon, Black Bin recyclers.

Recovery Operations Center (convenience/drop-off center) — Closed Saturday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 17.

Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter — (Serves the residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County) — Operating on normal schedule.
